The Tasman Bridge Disaster occurred in Hobart, Tasmania on January 5th, 1975. 12 people lost their lives; these cars left dangling over the edge were some of the lucky ones..

Wow. I’d read all about it but never saw such detailed pictures of cars hanging over the edge.

Similar to the Sunshine Skyway over Tampa Bay. Six cars and a Greyhound bus went down with the bridge with 35 killed after a frieghter struck the bridge pilings during a squall:

I remember going over the remaining span as a kid before they demolished the one that was hit. Other bridge looked totally normal, signage and everything. Even the start of the bridge was still there. And then a big gap.

Yeah my folks said I was always pretty concerned the other one could go at any moment. One of my Aunt’s friends was one of the last to make it over. Said it took her 20 years to trust a bridge again.
